Virginia mon amour

Nel giorno della strage al Virginia Tech (16 Aprile 2007) mi sono divertito a leggere dei commenti alla notizia del campus in virginia, postati sul sito del new york times dai lettori , e ne ho collezionati alcuni tra i piu' stupefacenti. Non tutti sono di questo spessore devo dire, anzi, questi sono la minoranza (direi un 30%, che e' tantissimo comunque). Ma vengono dal giornale piu esclusivo del paese, dal piu forbito e anche abbastanza orientato verso i democratici, se ha qualche senso. La loro concezione secondo cui possedere un'arma e' un diritto inalienabile come avere un'automobile o esprimere un'opinione, e' per noi europei (o almeno per me) difficile da capire. Che con al massimo un coltello in mano un ragazzino a cui salta qualcosa in testa non sia troppo pericoloso, a me pare una verita' banale, ma qui alla gente non sembra cosi'. Meglio se tutti armati, cosi persone "sane" possono reagire ed eliminare il problema alla radice. Che poi queste stesse decidano che e' meglio eradicare anche tutti i familiari del problema, e' solo una questione di definire cosa e' sano. Se si tolgono le armi da sotto il cuscino, la piu' parte della gente pensa che resteranno indifesi contro i criminali, i quali sempre troveranno il modo di avere un'arma. Vero, ma quello successo al Virginia Tech non sarebbe successo. Chissa' perche' non capiscono.

Good thing the shooter was killed, but it doesn't go far enough. I would be all for irreversibly sterilizing all of his close family members (I'm sure it was a male shooter), and continuing that group punishment until this type of human is removed from the gene pool. Criminals will always find a way to get guns, so why is it so hard to imagine that a gun in the hand of a trained, sane and law-abiding person could also mitigate or prevent a tragedy of this magnitude? — Posted by P

Ancora sul dubbio (NRA=l'agenzia delle armi di charlton eston) noto in quello che segue con raccapriccio l'ultima frase tra virgolette "", che avevo letto al consolato USA e che avevo personalmente assolutamente preso in altro modo. Non pensavo che si potesse pensare che avere armi e' una Liberta' Essenziale ! :
Do you any of you NRA-bashing, knee-jerking, idiots blame cars or alcohol for drunk-driving deaths? I am sure you don't. I'll bet not one of you asked for cars or alcohol to be banned because someone was killed by a drunk driver. Why is it so hard to hold the people who commit the crimes responsible for the crimes instead of insisting that everyone's rights be removed when a few criminals act out? Oh yeah, criminals access to weapons can't be fixed by yet-another-law-to-make-people-feel-good since criminals, by definition, don't obey laws.
